Winter Gems

By Paul, 17/01/2013 11:34 am

While the weather has turned cooler a quick walk around the nursery reveals some winter gems. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ is a mass of swollen buds beginning to burst into delicate soft white flowers with a pink tinge.

Prunus 'Autumnalis Rosea'

The sweet fragrance of Sarcococca (Christmas box) hangs in the chilly air. The rosey buds of Skimmia ‘Rubella’ are just about to open into clusters of scented white stars while the spidery florets of Hamamelis ‘Diane’ offers its soapy aroma. The jewel in the crown quite literally must be a variety of Hellebore which we are growing for the first time called Helleborus ‘Winter Jewels Cherry Blossom’. The majority of this carefully bred variety offer wonderfully large saucer shaped flowers of two tone rose & white Anemone centred flowers. A delightful double specimen was spotted with the same colours but fully double exotic looking flowers.

You can’t help but want to be in the garden in winter when surrounded by all these beautiful gems.

Autumn Colour Inspirations

By Paul, 14/09/2012 10:05 am

Autumn is upon us but do not despair as their is plenty of hardy colour to be found to brighten up those crisp Autumn days. Favourites include a wide range of colourful Pansies & Violas. Friolina trailing Violas have been the stars of Winter Hanging Baskets. Hardy Garden ‘Mums’ giving bold colours well into the autumn (and should return to flower again next year). Aida dwarf Wallflowers that not only flower in Spring as with other Wallflowers but have an early flush of colour in Autumn! All of these can be combined with Spring flowering Bulbs to provide brightness in the long Winter months.

Colours of Spring

By Paul, 28/02/2012 11:41 am

At last we are getting some warmer weather and although it is far too early to say we are free of the winter entirely at least we can make a start.

There is plenty of colour coming on now with a few sunny days we have seen many of the spring bulbs burst open providing a reward for the busy bees and other pollinators looking to feast after the colder days earlier in February. With more warm weather forecast this is the time to do the all important preparation so as to make the most of those garden plots this Spring and Summer.

Seed Potatoes Arrive!!

By Paul, 15/01/2011 1:20 pm
A selection of our seed potatoes

Seed Potatoes have now arrived and we have a good selection in stock selected for good yields and disease resistance. This year the majority of our varieties are being sold loose, so you can pick out the number of tubers you require rather than a whole bag. This means that if you want to try afew varieties you are not tied to buying surplus seed potatoes. Earlies include; Accord, Foremost, Lady Christl, Premiere & Sharpes Express. Second Earlies include; Kestrel & Nicola. Main Crop include; Cara, Maris Piper, Valor, International Kidney (Jersey Royal) & Pink Fir Apple.  Also just arrived are Sturon & Red Baron Onion Sets, Golden Gourmet Shallot sets. For the flower garden Sumer flowering bulbs and tubers have started to arrive.  Dahlias, Cannas & Lilies can be started off in pots if you have a frost free conservatory or green house. Lily of the Valley & Herbaceous Paeonias can be planted out soon to establish in borders. And of course choose a sunny spot for Dame Edna’s & Morrisey’s favourite flowers Gladioli.
