Award winning Baskets supplied by Cove Garden Nursery

We can advise on planting for a particular aspect for example full sun or shade. We can make the baskets up and look after them for a few weeks until they have rooted in & the danger of frosts have past by the end of May. Then you can hang them up and (providing you care for them well) impress everyone with your beautiful colourful displays.

Autumn Colour Inspirations

By Paul, 14/09/2012 10:05 am

Autumn is upon us but do not despair as their is plenty of hardy colour to be found to brighten up those crisp Autumn days. Favourites include a wide range of colourful Pansies & Violas. Friolina trailing Violas have been the stars of Winter Hanging Baskets. Hardy Garden ‘Mums’ giving bold colours well into the autumn (and should return to flower again next year). Aida dwarf Wallflowers that not only flower in Spring as with other Wallflowers but have an early flush of colour in Autumn! All of these can be combined with Spring flowering Bulbs to provide brightness in the long Winter months.

Hanging Basket Success!

By Paul, 10/09/2012 10:51 pm

Summer hanging baskets have had a difficult time this year due to the bad weather. Petunias especially have required constant dead heading. The high rainfall has leached out nutrients more quickly than usual, requiring the addition of extra feed. Why bother with all this effort you might ask? Well, we received photos from Seddons of Dulverton yestarday that I think prove this effort all to be worth while. These two baskets were, of course, planted up by us here at Cove and collected at the end of May (note the Red, White & Blue  theme).  I think you’ll agree they look superb & we can all (as gardeners) take heart that despite the adverse weather it is possible to produce fabulous results!

Mid Devon Show 23rd July!

By Helen, 16/07/2011 1:19 pm

Well midsummer has been and gone and the rush for bedding and basket plants has slowed down.  We still have some hanging baskets left so if you haven’t done them yet come and see us, they are looking beautiful!

We are also getting ready for the Mid Devon show next weekend which we are hoping will be as successful as last year.  Its a real chance for us to get creative with the plants and do something different!  We will be in the Flower and Garden Marquee again so come and see us!  Joolz of Wicked Willows will be there too and she has created something spectacular!  I have posted last years display below.

Other news:   at some point this summer we might be able to barbeque so let me remind you that we stock the amazing Bulworthy Project charcoal which is made locally,  its the best charcoal ever, no chemicals and burns really well.  Also if you are noticing bare patches on your lawn but don’t want to buy a whole box of grass seed we now sell loose practical lawn seed from Kings seeds, so if you just want a handful come and see us!  One last thing!  We now have our own Facebook page so search for Cove Garden Nursery and come and like us!

Springwatch at Cove

By Helen, 09/06/2010 11:11 pm

Anyone following Springwatch on the beeb would have seen all sorts of antics from the birds and the bees on their telly.  Well can tell you we have our own set of swallows nesting in the barn and was really excited to see a ‘banded demoselle’  dancing around my workshop window today (didn’t know what it was till we saw it on springwatch!) absolutely beautiful with irredescent blue wings, lovely to see.  We’ve had the ducklings who have been and gone (probably RIP) but our very secretive moorhens have had chicks and we saw a lovely fluffy black chick last week, they have gone into cover within the iris and bull rush that has taken over the pond so they may have a good chance.  Every now and then hear a ‘cheep’ so they must be there still..

On the plant front…bedding season is really with us..and after a really busy Bank Holiday we haven’t much left;  but we do have some  beautiful fuchsias, million bells, surfinas and more to make your baskets and tubs look fantastic.  We have on offer 10 for £10 s0 thats about right 5 plants for 2 baskets!  Have planted some ready made to go  also (took me ages to decide what to go in) so if you can’t be bothered you can pick up some baskets all done and ready!

And finally still having problems uploading pics so can’t illustrate this blog but as soon as we get it sorted will have loads for you!

Springtime at Cove!

By Helen, 19/05/2010 6:51 pm

We are currently having difficult uploading photos onto here at the moment so you will have to use your imagination while I describe whats been going on at Cove Garden Nursery recently….!

The warmer weather has really got the plants (and weeds) growing and we are fairly optimistic that we have almost seen the end of the frosts!  We would still advise caution with the tender plants and maybe have some fleece handy just in case!

In preparation for the summer we have been potting up a whole selection of basket and patio plants in readiness for your hanging baskets.  We have all the traditional favourites; fuchsias, geraniums and busy lizzies to mention a few,  our greenhouse is beginning to look very colourful after the endless winter!  We can also make up baskets to order and look after for them for you tell they are ready to go out, particularly handy if you are going on holiday.  If you prefer to create your own we have a selection of baskets, troughs and also have some rather nice  oak whiskey barrels (without the whiskey!).

If like others you have found that not only has the frost killed off your plants but the rabbits and deer have had a go at them too we have just received a product called ‘Grazers’.  This product is sprayed onto your plants and is proven effective against damage from the bunnies!  It is completely harmless to pets and has been used successfully used by farmers and growers.  We will be trying it on our own garden soon but if you would like more information have a look on www.grazers.co.uk .

We knew Spring had arrived when after weeks of finding abandoned eggs in random places we were rewarded one morning with our first batch of ducklings!  They are such a joy to watch and can be a bit elusive but if you come to see us you may spot them.  We have also been very lucky to have the Greater Spotted Woodpecker visiting our feeder regularly and we will be posting photos as soon as possible.

Finally the Tea Tent has been open weekends for cream tea and cakes and as the weather is warming up for the weekend we also have a small selection of ice creams from Langage Farm to tempt you!   (www.langagefarm.com) Yum!
