Devon Open Studios runs for two weeks in September and is where you get to have a nose around artist studios and workshops all over the county!  There are hundreds of artists opening their doors and it really is worth having a look at all the creative talent out there.   We are always open here but please do come and have a look at the new work I have been making.  For details of artists exhibiting in your area check out www.devonartistnetwork.co.uk

Other news:  we now have spring flowering bulbs for planting up now.  Also as the summer blooms start to fade we now have autumn/winter bedding packs of cheery pansies and violas amongst others to brighten up a gloomy day!

Midsummer?!

By Helen, 22/06/2011 10:18 am

We have just had the longest day, Wimbledon has started and Glastonbury Festival starts this weekend, so that means only one thing…RAIN!   Of course we do need it after a very dry spring and it means less outdoor watering for us and it also gives me an excuse to get into my workshop and make some bits and bobs out of glass!   I have made some larger outdoor bunting which is hanging on our Tea Tent (open on fine days!) and would look lovely draped among trees or on a pagoda, perfect for adding a festive touch to a summer Bar-B-Q!  Come and see us or give me a ring if you would like something a bit different for your garden.

I have also been making some etched name hangers so if you are stuck for any gift ideas, get in touch with me for that too, they are ideal for a christening or birthday gift!

If you haven’t yet done your hanging baskets and patio planters we now have 25% off summer bedding, so that means 10 9cm plants including fuschias for £7.50!  Its not too late to do them and for that price you can go mad and create a riot of colours to cheer you on a rainy day!

We are currently having the hottest and driest April and Easter ever!  Which is great news for us especially this Easter Sunday when we host the Cove Arts and Crafts Market.  We have jewellers, potters, wood turners amongst others and should be a brilliant day to meet with crafters and maybe buy an original piece of work!  We will also be selling cream teas from our now green Tea Tent or maybe a nice ice cream from Langage Farm!    We will be open normal Sunday trading of 10 till 4 so come and meet the crafters!

This is some recently made glass bunting that would look  pretty just about anywhere!   I can make them any colour to match your decor and I think they would look really sweet in a little girls bedroom with some fairy lights!   I have added some beads to give them extra sparkle.  These retail at £20 and they can be made to any length.

If you fancy something handmade for Christmas then we have a selection of glass tree decorations and suncatchers made by myself!  We have also had a fresh delivery of trees today if you needed something to hang them on!

Festive Suncatchers

If you always fancied learning how to copper foil I am available for 1 to 1 tuition,  you could book a session for a loved one as a Christmas present!  Just give us a ring for details.

Festive wreath

We have  festive wreaths for sale, this one is an alternative to the traditional but we also have natural holly wreaths available.

For our cat loving customers meet a new addition to the team.   This is Tom one half of two kittens we got from the Blue Cross, Jerry (naturally)  is the other brother but is very difficult to photograph, hopefully he will stand still for me long enough to get a decent photo soon!

Pictures at an Exhibition

By Helen, 18/11/2010 5:29 pm

This is a new piece of copper foiled glass entitled ‘The Castle’.  Its inspired by Mussorgskys ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ after a call by the EMG Symphony Orchestra for Devon artists to create work inspired by a movement from it.

The EMG will be preforming Pictures at an Exhibition at Exeter Cathedral on 25th November at 7.30  where you can view this and other artworks.  http://www.emgsymphonyorchestra.org/  for details..

Snowdrop in Summer!

By Helen, 15/08/2010 11:13 am

Well I’d like to say we are enjoying lovely long August  days dipping our toes into the water and drinking Pina Coladas but this being Devon and the school holidays, summer is doing what it normally does and its either raining or really windy here!  But we are not discouraged its still beautiful in Cove whatever the weather!  I hate to mention autumn but the leaves are definitely starting to change colour here,  so with that in mind if you are thinking of the new term ahead and are wondering whether to join a class at night school or learn a new skill I will be offering 1 to 1 tuition in copper foiling this autumn.  If you’ve fancied having a go I will show you how to cut glass and then assemble a panel or large sun catcher to take home with you.  Get in touch for a chat or email for details.

Talking of copper foiling I recently made a snowdrop for a shepherds hut.  The very nice people I made it for have sent me the images of it fitted in and it looks fantastic.  They are a company called ‘Dods of London’ and they will have a stand at the National Gardening Show at the Bath and West Showground in September if you want to have a look at it.   They restore shepherds huts and gypsy caravans to a very high standard and I want one!   Will link onto their site when its up and running but here is what they look like below!

Going potty again!

By Helen, 15/03/2010 9:56 am

We have just taken delivery of pots from Pot Porrium who travelled from East Anglia and made a wonderful display for us.  We are the only stockists in the South West so you are sure to find something different.

Pots

We are also adding to our plant stock on a weekly basis so now have climbers such as clematis and wisteria and favourites such as rhododendron and azaleas.  For those who are still waiting for the bulbs to come out we have daffs, crocus and primroses to name a few to add a bit of instant colour.

We now have our new road signs up so anyone who doesn’t know we are here has no excuse now!

Sign!

Finally, we are lucky to have on sale a selection of beautiful and original hand made tiles by Exmoor based ceramicist Jacqueline Leighton Boyce.  Our photos don’t do the work justice but they feature an iridescent glaze which sparkles in the sunlight!  Inspired by nature each is carefully observed and delicately executed.   If you are after a unique piece of art and reasonably priced then come and see us!

Spring around the corner?

By Helen, 06/03/2010 4:06 pm

primrosesWell the last few days have been Spring like here in Cove and we have all been feeling very positive!  Nothing like the sun to get you out into the garden, and discover what has survived the frost and beginning to shoot up.  If you need a bit of instant colour and can’t wait we have some lovely primroses in an array or colours!  We also have a selection of iris and crocus as seen in the photos below.

We are also now selling lovely ceramic hearts made by Devon artist Nicky Harland who presses  fresh flowers into the clay to make a print.  Very pretty and ideal for Mothers Day!

I have recently finished a private commission with the brief of  ’do whatever you like’ so I designed this simple piece inspired by the rolling hills of Devon I can see from my window which I had been thinking of recreating in glass for a while.  I actually used all lead instead of copper foil this time seeing as it is quite big, something I haven’t done for a while. If anyone would like something similar get in touch!!

Devon Hills

And finally if anyone has been wondering about Jack Cat here he is fully exploring his territory at last now he is able to go outside.  He is proving to be a very useful member of staff as he has already caught 3 mice (possibly blind!).

Fen Paintings
Fen Paintings

We have got to the stage in the craft shop refurbishment when we are ready to put paintings up.  So we are very lucky to have a selection of oil paintings by Cambridge artist Ashley Baldwin Smith.  With these paintings he has given us a reminder of the fens of East Anglia and captured the beautiful sunsets and never ending skys that inspired Constable and Turner.  We feel very lucky that he has given us this chance to show and sell his work.  He has also been inspired by the rolling hills of Devon and the beauty of Exmoor and for anyone wanting a local scene we have his ‘Storm over Exmoor’ oil painting which perfectly captures the drama and atmosphere of the breaking storm.   Go on to our links to click onto his site for more information and better reproductions of his work.

Hilary Butler Pottery

Hilary Butler Pottery

We also have some individual pottery by Hilary Butler who also makes the beautiful (Devon beach collected) sea glass sculptures and hangings as well as dicroic glass pendants.  So all in all feeling that the shop is beginning to look very good (though I must admit we haven’t got the floor tiles yet!)  we still have some amazing jewellery for sale from Glitz’n'Glamour, Vivabeader, KMD , brooches by Lucy’s Designs and Snapdragon and also some stained glass by Helen Fonnereau..(thats me).
