Easter Fair

By Paul, 06/03/2017 11:49 am

This coming Easter Sunday, after a year off last year due to the roadworks (now just a distant memory) we are preparing for the return of our ever popular Easter Fair. This year we hope to make it bigger and better that ever! With more local crafts people displaying their wares plus some additional refreshments including cakes, Pizza and other hot food plus teas and coffees.  Meadow Forge are booked to bring their mobile forge along as well as crafts ranging from pottery, woodcraft, felting, lavender products, jewellery, illustrations, textiles and more. This year to add to the atmosphere we have a vintage DJ spinning old 78rpm records on wind-up gramophones. So save the date in your diary, Sunday 16th April entry is FREE so come along and have some fun and support local crafts. All our usual plants, pots, composts and sundries will be available including our range of tub & basket plants. This year we will also be joined by the Culmstock Chilli Company who are passionate about growing Chilli plants so this year is sure to be Hot, Hot, Hot! Keep an eye on our blog, Twitter and Facebook page for all the latest news.

SUMMER BEDDING

By Paul, 02/05/2013 8:02 am

We now have ready a large selection of summer flowering bedding plants just in time for the May Bank Holiday weekend. You’ll still have to keep an eye out for any late frosts, especially for tender options such as Begonias & Marigolds but there are still plenty of hardier options if you want to get started but live in a frost pocket. These include Alyssum, Antirrhinums, Mimulus, Cineraria Silver Dust & Stocks, all of which can stand a frost once hardened off. Even Petunias & Geraniums will tolerate light ground frosts once hardened off. If you are lucky enough to live in a milder spot or be able to offer plants a little additional protection with fleece or plant up containers undercover, then there is a wide range available. You don’t have to make elaborate bedding schemes like the ones you see in municipal parks, spectacular though they are, a few bright bedding plants in herbaceous & shrub borders can enliven these spots.  We are optomistic that the weather will be better this summer than last year and what better way to make the most of your outdoor spaces that quick growing, colourful Bedding plants!

Iris lazica

By Paul, 14/03/2013 10:45 am

This beautiful evergreen Iris has been flowering for us for a while with it’s blue flowers veined with white at the base of the falls. Best in full sun or partial shade flowers appear late winter through to early spring. It is closely related to Iris unguicularis, another evergreen winter flowerer and both thrive on poor soils and form large clumps that can be easily divided if they become too big.

Winter Gems

By Paul, 17/01/2013 11:34 am

While the weather has turned cooler a quick walk around the nursery reveals some winter gems. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ is a mass of swollen buds beginning to burst into delicate soft white flowers with a pink tinge.

Prunus 'Autumnalis Rosea'

The sweet fragrance of Sarcococca (Christmas box) hangs in the chilly air. The rosey buds of Skimmia ‘Rubella’ are just about to open into clusters of scented white stars while the spidery florets of Hamamelis ‘Diane’ offers its soapy aroma. The jewel in the crown quite literally must be a variety of Hellebore which we are growing for the first time called Helleborus ‘Winter Jewels Cherry Blossom’. The majority of this carefully bred variety offer wonderfully large saucer shaped flowers of two tone rose & white Anemone centred flowers. A delightful double specimen was spotted with the same colours but fully double exotic looking flowers.

A stunning selection of H. 'Winter Jewels Cherry Blossom'

You can’t help but want to be in the garden in winter when surrounded by all these beautiful gems.
