Seed Potatoes varieties for 2013 have arrived and this season we have 22 varieties in total. Most of these we are able to offer loose so that once again customers can select only the number and sizes of potatoes they require. It may seem early to some to buy you seed potatoes in January. Buying early gives you the best choice as well as enabling the early chitting. Chitting can be done by laying the tubers with the “eyes” facing up in a tray (cardboard egg boxes are ideal). They should then be placed in a cool but frost free place with good light but out of direct sunlight. Under the staging in a greenhouse is ideal (make sure it remains frost free) or alternatively cool spare room can do the job. They should stay there until the shoots reach about 2-3cm long (this takes between 6 & 8 weeks). The traditional time for planting the tubers out in the garden is around Easter. Earlier plantings are possible in sheltered areas and under protection. Plant about 12cm deep in a well prepared bed. Alternatively Potato growing bags can be used if space is limited. Many of the varieties we have selected this season were chose for their disease and pest resistance, especially to Blight and Slugs, which caused so many problems last summer. Varieties such as Accord, Orla, Romano, and Setanta offer good resistance to Blight. For flavour it is hard to beat Charlotte, Nicola or the slightly nutty, buttery flavour of Pink Fir Apple. Everyone has there favourite and anyone can grow a crop of there own home grown spuds.
