Stained Glass Kingfisher

By Helen, 20/02/2010 9:10 am

Well its another snow day here in Devon so its time to sit in the warm and update the blog!  Have finally made a kingfisher, its really hard to recreate the amazing flash of blue but I think its worked quite well.  He is hanging in the shop window ready for someone to take him home and enjoy!

Thinking of our feathered friends during this never ending winter we have just received a delivery of Gardman bird care and sundries.  We have a selection of feeders, seeds and nuts, everything you need to keep them happy.  We also have a selection of sundries to keep the gardener happy including some thermometer’s in case you want to know what the temperature is (freezing I would say!)

More Valentines Gifts!

Blue Heart

Blue Heart

Valentines Day is only a week away so here are some new stained glass hearts for your loved one!  So this year instead of the usual roses and chocolates why not treat them to something that will last for ever!  (Maybe you should still buy the chocolates and perhaps some bubbly just in case?!)  We also have some handmade cards by Sunrise Cards to go with our expanding range of crafts.  These gifts would work equally well for Mothers Day which is 14th March.   Why don’t you suprise the important people in your lives with something unique instead of leaving it to the last minute and popping down the 24 hour garage!!

Have just also finished this latest commission which I thought I would share with you.  If you would like something similar come in and have a chat!  Anyone wondering what has happened to the kingfisher I have seen him daily and  have finally made him in stained glass.  Just waiting for some lead to arrive to frame him and will post it up for all to see and judge!

Fen Paintings
Fen Paintings

We have got to the stage in the craft shop refurbishment when we are ready to put paintings up.  So we are very lucky to have a selection of oil paintings by Cambridge artist Ashley Baldwin Smith.  With these paintings he has given us a reminder of the fens of East Anglia and captured the beautiful sunsets and never ending skys that inspired Constable and Turner.  We feel very lucky that he has given us this chance to show and sell his work.  He has also been inspired by the rolling hills of Devon and the beauty of Exmoor and for anyone wanting a local scene we have his ‘Storm over Exmoor’ oil painting which perfectly captures the drama and atmosphere of the breaking storm.   Go on to our links to click onto his site for more information and better reproductions of his work.

Hilary Butler Pottery

We also have some individual pottery by Hilary Butler who also makes the beautiful (Devon beach collected) sea glass sculptures and hangings as well as dicroic glass pendants.  So all in all feeling that the shop is beginning to look very good (though I must admit we haven’t got the floor tiles yet!)  we still have some amazing jewellery for sale from Glitz’n'Glamour, Vivabeader, KMD , brooches by Lucy’s Designs and Snapdragon and also some stained glass by Helen Fonnereau..(thats me).

Valentines Gifts and going Potty!

My latest art project!

My latest art project!

Its been quiet here but that doesn’t mean we haven”t been busy.  We’ve had another skip delivered, this time a mega one because we filled the last in no time at all.  So I’ve been sorting pots..lots of them and as you can see I have been going a bit potty.  I had to take a photo and I kind of like it in a random sculptural way!  Paul has been busy along with our friend Mark refurbishing the craft shop.  Its been plastered and painted and is starting to look very fresh.  Just need to put carpet tiles down and we are done.

Which leads me on to Valentines Gifts have received some beautiful necklaces from KMD who makes very delicate and beautiful jewellery, a gift for any occasion (Mothers Day coming soon too!)  and UK handmade.

And finally by popular demand meet the newest member of the Cove team…my new lap top or should I say Jack Cat!  We adopted him from the Blue Cross before Christmas and he  is a very laid back cat considering all the guests we have had recently along with their dog!  He is still quite young and is only going outside in small doses but managed to get stuck up a tree today!  Luckily didn’t need to call the fire brigade, just Paul with a ladder!

Snow Day at Cove

moorhen in snow

Where's my food?

Well the snow that has been promised for ages finally arrived (about 2 weeks too late)  with a vengeance last night.  We measured 7 inches on the benches.  We have been shovelling it off the polytunnels to minimise damage but by the look of the forecast we may have to do it again.  Had to shovel it off the bird table too and am more concerned about running out of food for them!  Recent bird visits have been the kingfisher briefly and regularly see bull finches, nuthatch and also buzzards in the valley.

It has been stunning in the snow and extremely peaceful, as I look out of the window at the birch trees I could imagine myself in Lapland.  Need a deer to come pose for the camera to make our next Christmas cards!  They have been shy of late but saw plenty of prints in the snow this morning.

but we're still open!!

but we're still open!!

We are currently refurbishing the craft studio but are actually open for business but none but the foolish would venture out in this!

New Crafts and Mr Fox escaped…

Brooches from Lucys Designs

Brooches from Lucys Designs

Received these  fantastic brooches from Lucys Designs today,  she makes beautiful bags out of hand made felt and am hoping to stock them next year when we make the craft shop less dusty and cold!  But in the meantime these funky brooches are cheerful and totally individual they would make great stocking fillers!

Following from the last blog think that fantastic Mr Woody Fox must have jumped out of his mosaic because we were honoured and suprised by a fox poking his nose at our patio door yesterday for breakfast, extremely beautiful creature and so exciting for the children!

New Crafts Arrived Today

By Helen, 08/12/2009 8:29 pm

Took delivery of some of Hilary Butlers beautiful glass pendants just in time for Christmas.  Also some of her sea-glass and driftwood hangings which are completely unique so if you want a one off piece of art you know where to come!  Will take some photos to upload on here but examples of her work are already on this website.  Am just waiting for a sunny day to take some photos in the right light,  the weatherman says that sun is coming but I’ll believe that when I see its hardly stopped raining since we’ve got here!  Kingfisher alert saw him this morning, he is definitely inspiring me to make a piece of leaded glass for the craft shop!

Peace Doves

Small Dove

Here are some of the Peace Doves I have made this week.  We have been asked to put a tree in Bampton Church festival of trees so I thought the dove would be appropriate!   Its difficult to photograph glass so I think they came out quite well.  The glass is a beautiful wispy iridescent so it really catches the light.  Have also had a range of hand made jewellery by Glitz and Glamour (am going to link to her but left her web address in the shop so google it till I put the post up sorry!)  which is fun and funky so that has helped  brighten the shop up.  Expecting more to come soon!   Haven’t seen the kingfisher today but have been busy so its probably been hiding, luckily haven’t had anymore tap dancing owls lately either!

A Week In Devon

By Helen, 04/12/2009 10:33 pm

Its been a week since we packed up our whole house and life  in the flat fens to move down to the rolling hills of Devon.  Its certainly been a week of contrasts  from  mild drizzle setting the scene for our arrival then ending the week with sharp frosts.  Not only have we had to get used to being here but our car has suddenly got to cope with  driving up hills!   I  opened the curtains on out first morning here to see 3 deer munching at the hedgerow, pretty to look at but they better keep away from the nursery.  Have also spent several relaxing moments  watching the kingfisher with its dash of electric blue flit amongst the leat.  All very idyllic except for being woken up by extremely noisy owls tap dancing on our roof!  Who said the countryside was peaceful!  We still have a lot of unpacking to do but have managed to clear some space in the workshop to make some more glass Christmas decorations after selling a couple in the shop this week, just the incentive to get me creating.
